"4 PER 1 000" : SOILS FOR FOOD SECURITY AND THE CLIMATE
Increasing soil carbon content
The "4 per 1000" initiative aims to increase the soil organic matter content and carbon sequestration, through the implementation of agricultural practices adapted to local environmental, social and economic conditions, as proposed in particular by the agro-ecology, agroforestry, conservation agriculture or landscape management.
The ambition of the initiative is to encourage actors to engage in a transition towards a productive agriculture, highly resilient, based on an appropriate land and soil management, creating jobs and income and thus bearing sustainable development;
and to invite partners to raise awareness or implement concrete actions on soil carbon storage and the type of practices to achieve it (agro-ecology, agroforestry, conservation agriculture, landscape management...).
Since its launch, more than 250 organizations have already endorsed the initiative by signing the Paris Declaration, which sets its goals.
The Executive Secretariat of the "4 per 1000" Initiative is hosted by the CGIAR System Organization, an international organization based in Montpellier.
