The French scientific community launches the "Appel de Sète"

On the eve of the COP24, that will take place in Poland from December 3rd to 14th, a workshop mobilized the French scientific community on 7 and 8 November to meet the challenges of the "4 for 1000" initiative. Since COP21, the French scientific community is strongly mobilized around this initiative on soils for food security and climate. On the occasion of this workshop, the scientific community has launched a call to fund an ambitious scientific program: the "Appel de Sète", which has already collected some fifty signatures, among them researchers from CIRAD, CNRS, IDDRI, INRA, IRD, IRSTEA, and also partners from Brazil, Spain, Madagascar, Senegal and Morocco.

5th International Rice Congress, Oct. 14-17, 2018, Singapore

Held every four years,it is organized by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). The 4 per 1000 Initiative  co-organized with IRRI a 3.5-hour session led by Drs Pauline Chivenge and Ole Sander, IRRI scientists on "Carbon Sequestration for Climate Change Mitigation". Download the program.

It included 4 plenary talks and 6 rapid fire talks of 5-10 min each followed by general discussion. The session focused on the possibilities, limitations and benefits of increasing soil carbon sequestration in rice soils to meet the objectives of the 4 per mille initiative. In general, most rice soils, which are characterized by flooding during paddy management, are rich in soil organic carbon. Thus, maintaining SOC and preventing greenhouse gas emissions (CH4 and N2O) is critical. However, due to climate change, prolonged wetting through irrigation may no longer be possible and cultivation of other crops during dry periods with emphasis on SOC enhancement is becoming more important. The participants reviewed on-going work on soil organic carbon in rice soils in relation to changing land and water management and climate, and examined areas of research to increase or maintain soil C in rice soils. The participants also discussed the proposal of initiating a global consortium on SOC in rice soils and there was a strong support for IRRI to lead such an effort in collaboration with 4p 1000 and other stakeholders including national programs. A workshop was also suggested to come up with the objectives, possible policy brief, publication and awareness campaign for the consortium.  The group also suggested that the workshop include emerging issues on soil health, residue burning, and use of remote sensing. The group also agreed to publish a proceeding of the symposium.

International Conference on Agricultural GHG Emissions and Food Security, Sep. 10-13 2018, Berlin

Under the aegis of the Joint Programming Initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change (FACCE-JPI) and the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA) in collaboration with the CGIAR Research Programme on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) the “International Conference on Agricultural GHG Emissions and Food Security – Connecting Research to Policy and Practice” (AgriGHG 2018 Conference) focused on policies and innovative practices that can help mitigate agricultural GHG emissions while ensuring sustainable and resilient agricultural production and enhanced food security.

The 4 per 1000 Executive Secretariat supported the event with a field trip on the last day with the title "How to achieve the 4 per 1000 goal? – Demonstrations of Soil Organic Matter Management in Brandenburg". Two dairy farms were visited and strategies to cope with natural variability to maintain and increase soil organic matter were discussed. A good soil organic matter management was highlighted by the farmers as helpful for coping with extreme weather events such as the drought experienced in Germany in summer 2018.

21st World Congress of Soil Science - Aug. 12-17, 2018, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

The Congress was organised by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), the Latin American Soil Science Society (SLCS) and the Brazilian Soil Science Society (SBCS). One session was dedicated to the initiative "4 per 1000": "The organic matter of the soil to preserve the food and the water and the initiative “4 per 1000". This session was chaired by Beata Madari, member of the Scientific and Technical Committee. It brought together more than 150 people and saw the interventions of Claire Chenu, also STC member, and Budiman Minasny, among others. Key issues were discussed, e.g. permanence of storage, carbon stabilization and the future of the science-policy dialogue. The latter relied on recent articles on carbon storage in initiative systems, such as "Increasing Organic Soil Stocks in Agricultural Soils: Knowledge Gaps and Potential Innovations", Claire Chenu et al. 2018.
Furthermore, as part of the "Carbon sequestration potential of soils" session, led by Claire Chenu and Denis Angers, the article by M. Corbeels, R. Cardinael, K. Naudin, H. Guibert and E. Torquebiau "The 4 per 1000 goal and soil carbon storage under agroforestry and conservation agriculture systems in sub-Saharan Africa " and the first results of the project" Scale out the 4 per 1000 initiative " were presented by Julien Demenois. The carbon storage potentials of agroforestry and conservation agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa were presented. The need to develop multistakeholder approaches in the context of agricultural innovation systems was also put forward to ensure the dissemination of practices contributing to the objectives of the 4 per 1000 initiative.

Soil organic matter management in agriculture - Assessing the potential of the 4per1000 initiative - May 29-30, 2018, Braunschweig, Germany

This conference was organized by the Thünen Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture, a research institution part of the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The conference identified the amount of C input to the soil as the key to maintain and increase SOC stocks. It was stressed that external C inputs should be applied considering efficient nutrient balance. It was shown that monitoring a SOC increase of 0.4% is possible when properly designed. The need for a synergistic view on options to enhance SOC and the importance of networks for knowledge sharing were highlighted
