4p1000 second call for formative assessment of projects

Further to the success of the first call in 2019, the 4p1000 Initiative and the World Agrorestry (ICRAF) launch the second call for formative assessment of projects. This original idea aims to bring out field projects in the spirit and framework of the objectives of the "4 per 1000" Initiative, projects to be submitted to the STC evaluation. Projects that receive a positive appraisal will be offered to major international donors who will be able to grasp them and submit them to their own selection criteria for funding. The call opens on May 15 2020 and closes on July 15, 2020.

Results of the 4p1000 first call for formative assessment of projects

Further to the first call closed in September 2019, 13 projects have been received. The projects have been assessed by the STC members and the summary report of the assessment together with the recommendations to improve the project were sent to the project holders at the end of January. Taking into account the summary report and the recommendations from the assessment of every project, the STC and the Executive Secretary of the “4 per 1000” Initiative consider that the following four projects are in line with the objectives of the “4 per 1000” Initiative and hope that each of these projects will be supported by appropriate funding from funders compatible with the goal of the Initiative. The remaining nine projects received recommendations on how to improve the project in order to be in line with the objectives of the “4 per 1000” Initiative.
Title of the selected projects:
• PFA-01 Feed the Future Resilient Agricultural Markets Activity-Beira Corridor (RAMA-BC)
• PFA- 03 Land for Life
• PFA- 06 Wheat for climate and people (WPC)
• PFA- 07 Soil Restoration and Multifunctionality of degraded forest lanscapes in Ivory Coast (TERRI4SOL)

A Call for Action - Climate Action Summit 2019

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently published a special report on climate change and land

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently published a special report on climate change and land. For too long, agriculture was seen merely as a greenhouse gas (GHG) emitter, yet it has major potential to mitigate and adapt to climate change, as highlighted by the 4 per 1000 initiative. The IPCC report lists and assesses several possible solutions, in the light of various criteria. Julien Demenois, ecology researcher and 4 per 1000 correspondent at CIRAD, deciphers its contents.

One Planet Business of Biodiversity (OP2B)

Global biodiversity is declining faster than any time in human history, warn scientists from around the world. According to the global assessment report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) published in May 2019, 1 million species out of the estimated 8 million on earth, are facing extinction within decades. Yet biodiversity is the foundation of our societies, businesses, health and quality of life.
Decades of investment and agricultural models based on efficiency and productivity to meet the needs of a growing global population are highly impacting biodiversity, food diversity and ecosystems.
To reverse the trend, Livelihoods Venture, partner of the 4p1000 Initiative, and 18 major companies are launching One Planet Business for Biodiversity (OP2B), an innovative, global coalition with one common goal: transform the food and agriculture systems to protect biodiversity, for the benefit of planet and people. Committed to build sustainable agricultural models while preserving natural ecosystems, Livelihoods Venture is joining the coalition and will bring support in its 3 pillars for action: regenerative agriculture, product diversification and restoration of ecosystems. OP2B coalition was announced yesterday at the United Nations Climate Summit, in New York City.

World Soil Day - 5 December 2019

ISRIC has been updating their soil property maps for the world (SoilGrids250m). Numerous improvements were implemented since publication of the `2017 version’, making this a completely new product. A sneak preview is available here; the full version with supporting web viewer will be released around March 2020.

So far, the layers have been submitted to a first draft expert evaluation at ISRIC. We are aware that some layers are prone to change prior to their final release in early 2020. While we continue to address some of the identified issues, you are most welcome to help us improve SoilGrids by providing your expertise for the geographical areas you are most familiar with. For this, you are kindly invited to answer a few questions on the following form to help us to qualitatively evaluate the general patterns of the different layers. You may also help us by sharing soil profile data and soil expertise for your country
